Ottawa River Boathouse Revitalization Project

The National Capital Commission (NCC) will be undertaking major restoration work at the Ottawa River Boathouse over the coming year. To protect this heritage building — a historic landmark — and to make it universally accessible for all Canadians, including Ottawa residents, to enjoy year-round, several elements will be restored.  Construction is scheduled to commence mid-July and will impact cycling and pedestrian pathways.

Located on the Ottawa River at 501 Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway, the Boathouse has been a landmark and a site for boating and water sports activities for nearly 100 years. As the custodian of this building, the NCC recognizes the history of this landmark and the role it has played in the community throughout the years. This work is part of the NCC’s major infrastructure projects funded by the Government of Canada’s $55-million investment announced in the 2018 federal budget.

Activity at the site will ramp up the week of July 15, 2019, with the delivery of construction materials and installation of construction fencing. The realignment of the Aviation Pathway, south of the Ottawa River boathouse, and its replacement with a temporary asphalt pathway, will ensure that cyclists and pedestrians are able to easily make their way through the area without experiencing any major inconvenience.

The closure of select cycling and pedestrian pathways will follow, to allow for dedicated construction access, which will ensure the safety of all pathway and facility users. Detailed information about these closures is available on the project web page.

Work planned for the remainder of 2019 includes the following:

·       the replacement of the boathouse bridge in August/September;

·       the start of landscaping and accessibility improvements in the fall, to continue into 2020;

·       connection to municipal water services in the late fall; and

·       insulation of the attic and ballroom in the fall, making these spaces usable year-round.

In 2020, NCC will see work continue on-site, with the installation of a new pedestrian crossover, replacement of siding and windows, and upgrades to the sanitary sewer.

This is an exciting time for the community and for the NCC. We are eager to keep the public and the community informed about this project, and will continue to provide regular updates to various interest groups, as well as community associations and elected officials.
