This newsletter for April provides City Hall and Ward updates, mainly concerning COVID-19.

Following the lead of the Ottawa Public Health during the COVID-19 public health crisis, our office will be working remotely until further notice. Our team will continue to serve you through our social media channels, phone line, and e-mail. We will continue to support resident inquiries and we will be exploring alternative ways of engaging with the community instead of public events. Here's how you can continue to contact and engage with us:

E-mail is the preferred method of contact for the quickest response. If you're writing about a City service please consider directing your inquiry to 3-1-1 first, either by calling 3-1-1, e-mailing [email protected] or completing an online form. If you have already contacted 3-1-1 and are unhappy with the response or service, please feel free to contact us and provide your Service Request number to help us assist you better.  

COVID-19 mobile application launch

The Government of Canada launched the Canada COVID-19 mobile app, which provides up-to-date information about the COVID-19 pandemic, including advice for preventing the spread of the virus, important contact numbers, and guidance for seeking medical help.

You can download the app for free on Canada.ca, the App Stores for Apple iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. The app is also available as a web application that can be accessed on any laptop or desktop computer browser.

This app is just one more way we can give Canadians the information they need during this pandemic, and tools like these are helping to reduce the strain on telehealth lines, as well as in-person services such as walk-in clinics and visits to family doctors and urgent care centres.

Financial Assistance

If you’re facing financial hardship as a result of COVID‑19, there is support available for individuals and businesses.

Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) will provide a taxable benefit of $2,000 a month for up to 4 months to eligible workers who have lost their income due to COVID-19.

Waste Collection Tips

Frontline waste collection operators are continuing to work through the pandemic. To ensure the health and safety and avoid injury to our waste collection operators as they provide essential services, residents can help by:

• placing used paper facial tissues in plastic bags before disposing them in the green bin
• placing garbage in bags before placing it in the garbage containers
• storing household hazardous waste safely until the hazardous waste depots resume
• continuing to practise good hygiene by thoroughly cleaning hands before handling waste collection materials

How to support local businesses during COVID-19

• Purchase food from local shops and producers when possible
• Get your coffee beans and teas from cafes in the neighbourhood
• Order meals to-go or takeout and delivery from restaurants
• Buy merch from local shops or businesses online
• Purchase gift cards to use at a later date
• Amplify local businesses on social media, leave them a review and share their posts

Buy gift cards

Visit the Vanier BIA Shopify store to browse for gift cards. Before the Ontario government ordered closures, many Vanier businesses opted to close in the interest of community health; to limit the spread of COVID-19. You can support your favorite businesses directly by purchasing gift cards for future use.

Seniors only shopping hours

The following businesses have introduced a seniors-only shopping hour to reduce the risk of exposure:

• Metro (Beechwood) 7am–8am daily
• Loblaws (McArthur) 7am–8am daily; no ID required; also for people with disabilities
• Hess’ Your Independent Grocer (Montreal Road) 7am–8am daily; 65+ with proof of ID

Prescription Deliveries

These neighbourhood pharmacies can fulfill prescriptions online or by phone; and offer free delivery:

• Guardian Drugs (Beechwood at Crichton) by telephone 613-749-4444 with free delivery for prescription items. Deliveries of store and over-the-counter items cost $5 for orders less than $20, unless you are also buying prescription drugs, in which case delivery is free.
