The Ottawa Police Service is warning residents about a scam involving fraudulent cell phone upgrade and promotion offers. Here’s how the scam works:
- A fraudster contacts you claiming to be from your cellular provider and offers an upgrade, promotion, or discount.
- You are convinced to order a new phone.
- Shortly after receiving the device, the fraudster contacts you again, claiming there is an issue with the order or setup process and instructs you to return the phone using a shipping label they provide.
- The phone is sent to the fraudster, leaving you responsible for the cost of a device you no longer have.
Protect yourself:
- Be cautious of unexpected calls, texts, or emails involving new devices or special offers.
- Never return a phone or electronic device based on instructions from an unsolicited caller.
- Contact your service provider directly using the phone number on your bill or their official website to verify any request.
