February 2, 2024 newsletter from Rawlson King, City Councillor for Rideau-Rockcliffe.
A Message from Councillor King
The Ottawa-Vanier New Year's Levee, held on January 29 at the Richelieu-Vanier Community Centre, was more than just a gathering; it was a testament to the vibrant spirit and dedication of our local community.
The Levee, organized by Ottawa-Vanier elected officials that included MP Mona Fortier, MPP Lucille Collard and Councillors Stéphanie Plante (Rideau-Vanier Ward), Tim Tierney (Beacon Hill-Cyrville Ward), and myself shone a spotlight on the remarkable contributions of volunteers who tirelessly work to uplift our neighborhoods.
Close to 200 individuals joined us for this memorable occasion, including Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, Councillor Riley Brockington (River Ward), U.S. Ambassador David Cohen and Japanese Ambassador Kanji Yamanouchi.
The highlight of the event was the special recognition extended to 19 outstanding volunteers in Ottawa-Vanier whose unwavering efforts have made a profound impact on the lives of others.
From Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward, we were proud to acknowledge:
Louise La Rose whose exceptional leadership guides a team of more than a dozen volunteers who tirelessly organize clothing donations for community members in need at The Rideau Community Hub. Serving individuals from diverse backgrounds, her Clothespin organization provides essential support to seniors, students, infants, children, and newcomers. Louise's steadfast dedication ensures that more than 7,000 Ward 13 residents receive critical assistance, underscoring the profound impact of her work.
Sara Bernard and Peter Gareau: Sara Bernard's journey as a volunteer began with advocating for Rideau High School, embodying resilience and determination. Alongside her husband Peter Gareau, Sara continues to champion causes that uplift the community. From organizing a high school prom to orchestrating charitable initiatives, Sara and Peter exemplify compassion and generosity. Their efforts, including arranging Christmas gifts for those in need and supporting vulnerable residents during the pandemic, reflect a profound commitment to serving others.
Peter Gareau's leadership extends beyond charitable endeavors, as he generously shares his talents and resources to support the Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County. Through initiatives like Food for Thought and the Covid-19 Feed The Isolated Initiative, Peter and Sara have provided essential aid to hundreds of seniors and families facing food insecurity, embodying the true spirit of community solidarity.
Liz Heatherington: Liz Heatherington's selfless contributions to community building and supportive initiatives are truly commendable. From teaching English to new Canadians at English Language Tutoring for the Ottawa Community (ELTOC) to volunteering with the Church of St. Bartholomew Refugee Committee, Liz's dedication leaves an indelible mark on Ottawa-Vanier and Rideau-Rockcliffe. Her efforts, which include fundraising for shelters, veterans, and community organizations, underscore her unwavering commitment to creating a more inclusive and compassionate society.
As we reflect on the extraordinary achievements of these volunteers, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for their selfless contributions. Their compassion, resilience, and generosity serve as beacons of hope, inspiring us to build a stronger, more vibrant community in Ottawa-Vanier, Rideau-Rockcliffe and beyond. I would also like to especially thank staff from all the elected officials' offices for organizing this event, as well as former Rideau-Vanier Councillor Mathieu Fleury, our esteemed emcee, who hosted the Levee with great enthusiasm. I also invite you to learn more about volunteer opportunities at Volunteer Ottawa (www.volunteerottawa.ca).
