A Message from Councillor King
Dear Residents:
As a member of the Ottawa Board of Health, I want to ensure families in Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward are aware of an important update from Ottawa Public Health (OPH) regarding children's routine vaccination records. OPH is urging families to ensure their children's records are current and properly reported. This critical step helps keep our schools safe and protects students from preventable diseases.
Every year, OPH reviews student vaccine records to confirm they meet Ontario's Immunization of School Pupils Act requirements. This process helps identify incomplete records early and prevents potential outbreaks, particularly among vulnerable populations. Currently, many student records across Ottawa remain incomplete.
Last fall, OPH sent approximately 15,000 first notices to families of students born in 2008 and 2018 (seven- and 17-year-olds), indicating their child's vaccine record on file was incomplete. These notices specify which vaccines appear missing and explain how to update records. In many instances, children have already received the required vaccines, but OPH simply hasn't been notified.
Families received one month to update their records before receiving a second notice, which includes a Suspension Order. Second notices began going out in December and will continue through February. Families receiving these have an additional month to provide updated information before suspension takes effect. Student suspensions for non-compliance began in mid-January and will continue through March on a staggered schedule by school board. However, OPH's primary focus remains on helping families understand how to verify records, obtain missing vaccinations, and report updates.
There are three important steps to stay compliant. First, check your child's record by comparing your vaccination records against Ontario's Publicly Funded Immunization Schedule. Students must be vaccinated against nine diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), polio, measles, mumps, rubella, meningococcal disease, and varicella (for students born in 2010 or later), or provide a valid exemption.
Second, report vaccinations to OPH. Your child may already be up-to-date, but OPH lacks the information. Healthcare providers don't automatically report vaccinations to OPH. Parents must do this. You can submit records online, through the Immunization Connect Ontario Tool (ICON) or via the CANImmunize App.
Third, get missing vaccines. Your child's healthcare provider is the recommended source for routine vaccinations. Discuss any missing vaccines with them. Families facing barriers or without a healthcare provider can book appointments at Kids Come First clinics or visit drop-in clinics at OPH’s Neighbourhood Health and Wellness Hubs, one of which is located in our ward at the Rideau Community Hub at 815 St. Laurent Boulevard.
Keeping vaccinations current protects your child, their classmates, and our entire community. OPH is committed to supporting immunization through education, resources, and improved access to help families overcome barriers. Some parents may encounter vaccine misinformation online or have questions about safety. Rest assured: vaccines are safe, rigorously monitored, and highly effective at preventing serious illness. If you have concerns or want to understand how vaccines work, speak with your child's healthcare provider for accurate, evidence-based information.

Your Councillor in the Community

I attended an insightful presentation by author Kathy Kacer at Manor Park Public School who shared stories of courage, resilience and memory related to the Holocaust featured in her book To Hope and Back.

It was a pleasure to attend the first annual ATU Local 279 Black Caucus Awards of Recognition ceremony with Transit Chair Glen Gower at OC Transpo headquarters today, in honour of Black History Month. Thank you to the union for donating $500 to Jamaican hurricane efforts!

Productive consultation with Ottawa Police on revitalizing community policing and the new district model. I joined Councillors Bradley, Carr, Dudas and Tierney to hear directly from residents and partners. Effective neighbourhood policing relies on coordination and honest dialogue.
Great to hear from Prime Minister Mark Carney, former House Speaker Greg Fergus and the Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine during the Government of Canada’s Black History Month celebration marking its 30th anniversary, held at the Canadian Museum of History.

Happy this week to attend an open house and information session that outlined the tremendous community impact made by the YMCA of the National Capital Region.
