As summer rain storms are becoming more intense, with heavier rainfalls, Ottawa residents can visit ottawa.ca to get valuable information such as information about basement flooding, water pooling and flood control, planning and prevention tips, as well as sandbag depot locations. 

Tips include preparations before an emergency, preventing basement flooding and information about residential flooding from Ottawa Public Health.

Supports for affected residents in the event of flooding:

Who to call: 

  • If your property is at risk call 3-1-1.
  • If it is an emergency situation, call 9-1-1.  
  • For information on provincial government and local community-based health and social services, call 2-1-1
  • Restoring Power and arranging for electrical repairs, call the Electrical Safety Authority: 1-877-372-7233
  • If Enbridge has shut off gas due to flooding, call Enbridge at 1-877-362-7434

Flooded basements are possible during heavy rain and thunderstorms. If your basement floods, contact your insurance company and 3-1-1 to notify City staff. More info and tips at: ottawa.ca/flooding

Sandbag locations:

The City of Ottawa provides sand and sandbags to residents who require them at the following locations:

  • 29 Hurdman Road
  • My office has arranged for a sandbag station to be established closer to Rideau-Rockcliffe. It is located at 911 Industrial Avenue.
    • Both sandbag stations at Industrial and Hurdman are located outside of the public works yards and can be accessed by residents 24/7.
