Road Safety Action Plan: Impaired Driving

Impaired driving is one of the most dangerous choices a driver can make. Not only is it
illegal, but it puts yourself – and everyone on the road – at risk. Whether caused by alcohol,
cannabis, or other drugs, impairment slows down reaction times, affects judgement, and
increases the likelihood of a serious or even fatal collision.

We all play a part in keeping our community safe:

  • Plan ahead: arrange a safe ride home with a designated driver, taxi, rideshare, or
public transit. Walking distance and weather appropriate? Take the scenic route but
remember, stay visible – be safe, be seen.
  • Say something: if you see someone about to drive impaired, speak up: help them
find another way home to keep everyone safe.
  • Know the law: driving while impaired is a criminal offence and can have legal
    consequences:
    • A minimum 1-year driver’s license suspension
    • A $550 fine
    • Mandatory participation in an education or treatment program
    • Installation of an interlock device in your vehicle
    • A criminal record.
      • Repeat offenders may face even tougher penalties.

From 2019 to 2023, 62 impaired drivers were involved in a collision that was either fatal or
resulted in a major injury.

Don’t be another statistic – drive safely, act wisely.
