Safer Roads Ottawa: Cyclist and Intersection Safety

Cyclist Safety

Cyclists are more vulnerable to severe injuries from vehicle collisions, and this risk increases for those 65+ or under the age of 15.
While on the road, consider cyclists: between 2020 and 2024, 60 collisions involving cyclists resulted in serious injury or fatality – and most could have been prevented.

What drivers can do to help prevent collisions:

  • Follow the rules of the road
  • Keep an eye out for cyclists – in rural neighbourhoods, they may ride on paved roads or shoulders
  • Before opening your car door or when turning at an intersection, look out for cyclists
  • Leave at least 1 metre space when passing a cyclist
  • Never tailgate
  • Be aware of possible cyclists in your blind spots

What cyclists can do to help keep themselves safe:

  • Follow the rules of the road and always make eye contact with drivers at intersections
  • Signal before turning or stopping and stay aware of your surroundings
  • Wear a helmet and bright or reflective clothing
  • Make sure your bike has a horn/bell, a white light on the front and a red light or reflector on the bike
  • Ensure your front forks have two white reflective strips
  • Never assume a driver saw you and move out of their blind spots as soon as possible

Intersection Safety

Intersections are where pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and vehicles meet. Did you know that between 2020 and 2024, 51 % of all fatal or major injuries in Ottawa occurred at or near an intersection?
Because intersections are a common spot for collisions, it’s important to be extra cautious when near or crossing through. Whether you are walking, cycling, riding or driving – practicing safe road behaviours is key!

Here are a few helpful tips to help you get started on practicing safe intersection crossings:

  • If driving, do not stop on crosswalks as this forces pedestrians into traffic.
  • As a motorcyclist, ride defensively because other drivers can’t always see you well!
  • Biking somewhere? Make sure you are visible in lowlight conditions.
  • Before crossing at an intersection, pedestrians and cyclists should try making eye contact with drivers whenever possible.
