December showers were not on our bingo card, Ottawa, yet here we are! Still, winter isn’t over yet; more snow is on the way just in time for the winter solstice.
Forecast and conditions
Cloudy conditions are expected late in the evening with light rain starting overnight and the low plus one. Rain is expected to continue through that day tomorrow with 10 to 20 millimetres possible changing to flurries in the late afternoon.
Our response
Supervisors will be monitoring the conditions of the transportation network this morning and into the evening. As the system moves into the region, supervisors will also monitor areas that are prone to localized flooding. Since yesterday, crews have been deployed where needed to clear selective residential neighborhoods and streets in advance of the mild temperatures.
Once the rain begins, the team will also be busy opening catch basins and ditches as required, particularly in areas that are known for water ponding and flooding, to ensure they are able to take in water. Crews will also be out spot treating the transportation network with salt as required ahead of the extreme drop in temperature forecasted on Friday.
With the temperature expected to rise well above zero today, and the significant amount of rain on the way, we are asking for anyone who can to ensure that their local catch basin is clear and able to take in water. With over 100,000 catch basins in the City, we cannot do it alone and would appreciate any support you can offer.
Find your nearest catch basin using our catch basin locator map. Need to report a blocked catch basin? Let us know!
The temperature is expected to drop to minus 13 overnight on Friday night and a flash freeze is possible. Areas such as sidewalks, roads, pathways and the winter cycling network that are wet could freeze, creating icy and slippery conditions. Residents are reminded to take extra care when walking, driving or cycling.
Next steps
Roads and Parking Services will continue to monitor the transportation network over the next 24 hours and over the weekend. Looking ahead to this weekend’s forecast, snow is expected overnight Saturday into Sunday morning with up to 5 centimeters possible.. The team will be ready to respond accordingly and if required, an update will be provided.
Thank you for your continued support and travel with care over the coming days.
