Here we are again, Ottawa. Another snow event has come and gone and under-delivered, leaving most of the city with approximately 8 centimetres of fresh snow. So, who’s done with winter? Anyone? Don’t be shy, you can raise your hand. We get it. Luckily, our winter warriors don’t quit. They’re built for the long haul—no matter what Mother Nature throws at us (or doesn’t) this season!
Forecast and conditions
Flurries will linger in the region through the day and evening with winds up to 15 kilometres per hour. The daytime high will be minus 4 with a wind chill of minus 9 this afternoon. Conditions are expected to clear overnight with the wind northwest at 20 kilometres per hour becoming light before morning. The overnight low will drop to minus 12 with a wind chill minus 16.
Our response
Supervisors have been monitoring conditions of transportation network overnight and will continue throughout the day. The team was busy working all night clearing and treating sidewalks, priority roads and the winter cycling network. Crews moved into residential neighborhoods overnight and early this morning and will continue through the day. The dayshift picked up right where the nightshift left off and will focus on cleaning up the transportation network and any problem areas such as bus stops, crosswalks, intersections, pedestrian islands, corners and cul de sacs.
Next steps
Roads and Parking Services will continue to monitor the conditions of the transportation network over the next 24 hours and beyond. With more than 50 days of recorded snow accumulation, this has been a very busy winter season for our crews and operational support staff. I’d like to acknowledge their hard work and unwavering dedication to serving our community.
Now that the system has moved out of the region and the forecast for the rest of this week is stable, this will serve as the final operational update for this winter event.
