Winter operations update for Dec. 24

It’s looking a lot like winter out there, Ottawa! The city received 15 to 20 centimetres of snow with higher amounts in localized areas. Nothing like a fresh blanket of snow to ring in the festive season and generate excitement about winter activities! Let’s get out there and play!

Forecast and conditions

Environment Canada has lifted the Snowfall Warning for the Ottawa region. The snow was steady all night before transitioning to flurries and then coming to an end early this morning. The temperature remains well below zero with a risk of freezing drizzle this morning and then partly cloudy for the rest of the day. Residents are reminded to take extra care when walking, driving, or cycling on the transportation network.

As a reminder, a winter weather parking ban has not been called. It is crucial for residents to support our operations today by finding off-street parking options. Please ask a friend or neighbour to share their laneway. When vehicles are removed from our streets, the Roads and Parking Services team can clear snow efficiently to create a wide-open roadway.

Our response

Supervisors will be monitoring the conditions of the transportation network throughout the day and into the evening. Crews will continue to treat sidewalks, arterial roads and the winter cycling network. Work began in residential neighbourhoods to clear and treat streets earlier this morning and will continue throughout the day and into the evening. They will also focus on cleaning up any problem areas such as bus stops, crosswalks, intersections, pedestrian islands, corners and cul de sacs. The nightshift will pick up right where the dayshift leaves off to complete any remaining work. As a reminder, the cold temperatures make it difficult to clear snow and ice so it will take crews longer to get through the entire transportation network. Please be patient as our crews navigate these difficult conditions.

Roads and Parking Services will continue to monitor the transportation network and address any problem areas accordingly.

Looking ahead to the next several days, the forecast is clear, and sun will be out.
