Shortly after noon today, Environment Canada issued a Yellow Warning - Snow Squall for the City. Wind gusts are expected to be up to 70 kilometres an hour, potentially creating dangerous conditions as visibility – caused by both falling and blowing snow – may be suddenly reduced. Snowfall accumulation of 5 to 10 centimetres is also possible for certain parts of the City. The timing of this event is expected to begin this afternoon and continue into the evening hours and an impact to the evening commute is expected.

Travel will likely be hazardous. Visibility will likely be suddenly reduced to near zero at times. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

Our response

We are ready and all crews will be deployed! Crews will be out in full force to clear and treat sidewalks, priority roads, bus routes, the Transitway and the winter cycling network. Parks Maintenance will also be out clearing and treating emergency service stations, libraries and community centers as well as some City facility parking lots.

Please be patient as our crews navigate these challenging weather conditions.

Next Steps

As the event continues making its way to the City, there is a chance for Environment Canada to update its alert – but, rest assured: We are ready. Supervisors will be out monitoring the transportation network, especially out in rural neighbourhoods where drifting and blowing snow are more likely to arise.

Please travel with extreme care this evening.
