Winter Operations Update - Saturday, January 6 - Afternoon

Well Ottawa, snow is in the forecast and winter is on the horizon. The Roads and Parking Services team has been getting equipment prepared, the salt domes filled and are ready to respond to the winter weather expected this weekend.

Forecast and conditions

Snow is expected to start late this evening and continue overnight and into tomorrow morning with a possible 5 to 10 centimeters by early Sunday afternoon. As the colder conditions continue, we can expect daytime highs and overnight lows to be well below the freezing mark throughout the weekend. These temperatures will result in snow accumulation on the transportation network.

Residents are reminded to exercise caution when using the transportation network this weekend. Please adjust to the conditions of the network.

Our response

The Roads and Parking Services team is ready! Over the next 48 hours, supervisors will monitor the forecast, road surface temperatures and the transportation network. Once accumulation starts, crews will be deployed and will focus on clearing and treating sidewalks, priority roads and our winter cycling network in accordance with the Council-approved Maintenance Quality Standards.

Next steps

Supervisors will monitor the transportation network as this winter event unfolds and crews will adapt to the conditions. Support from our residents is crucial as we respond to this event. We are committed to keeping you informed as we progress through the event and will provide another update tomorrow.

The Roads and Parking Services Team has also been tracking a major weather system expected Tuesday into Wednesday next week bringing a mix of snow and rain to the capital. We will continue to provide updates regarding this winter weather event and our preparedness as it moves closer to our region.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate our first winter event of 2024.
