Exploring our relationship to time, history and our response to the transformative properties of reflection and connection, Metamorphosis showcases 345 new pieces added to the City of Ottawa's art collection by nearly 70 different artists.
2022 has been a year of transformation across the city as the pandemic has restructured lives and is continually changing the way we go about our day. This transformation has inspired the theme of the latest art exhibition at the City Hall Art Gallery titled Metamorphosis.
Over the past year, the City has added 345 new pieces to its collection by nearly 70 different artists through purchase and donation. You can sample a selection of the recent additions to the Collection on display at the City Hall Art Gallery as a part of the Metamorphosis exhibition until February 3, 2023. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, December 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Speeches will begin at 6 pm. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, except holidays.
Metamorphosis: 2022 Additions to the City of Ottawa Art Collection explores our relationship to time and personal history in the context of our relationships with ourselves and others, our shared experiences, and our response to the transformative properties of reflection and connection. Entering a new era of optimism, the 56 artists taking part in this exhibition use their artistic practices to explore this time of reflection, renewal, and reconnection through diverse perspectives on society and our environment, identity, and memory.
Currently, the City has collected over 3,400 artworks over the past 35 years. The Collection contains work from more than 890 artists and can be found on display in over 170 municipal buildings and spaces around Ottawa. Pieces are added to the City of Ottawa Art Collection through purchase, commission and donation based on peer assessment committees’ recommendations.
